![]() ![]() As other's have pointed out, Baldur's Gate 3 is another worthy contender in the space.Īm I missing any other recent AAA RPG that allows for narrative role-playing? Because I'm drawing a blank.Regardless, we have no idea if we will ever get another Deus Ex title so they are out of the conversation. ![]() ![]() We're more allowed to shape Jensen's narrative/plot choices as opposed to their actual character. We do get slightly more dialog options, than say Fallout 4, to help define Jensen, but he's still a set character. Eidos Montreal's Deus Ex series had us playing a predefined character, Adam Jensen. But, it's hard to judge how much narrative role-play is allowed since we know nothing about it besides it being in the Pillars universe. Now they have announced Avowed an actual AAA RPG by the studio. It does allow for narrative role-playing though, but again it's not AAA. The closest they've come to is The Outer Worlds, but that title isn't AAA. Obsidian hasn't made a AAA RPG in a long time, New Vegas was the last. And, we have no idea what Starfield will look or play like. The Elder Scrolls series tends to be more free form, but the last entry was Skyrim almost a decade ago. That said, you can at least choose the faction you ultimately decide to side with so that's something, I guess. You can't be some ruthless raider that only cares about bottlecaps, you must be a loving father/mother who desperately wishes to be reunited with their child. The last Bethesda title was Fallout 4 which was brilliantly mocked for its complete lack of narrative role-playing as every exchange boiled down to your character answering either Yes, Yes, or Yes (sarcastic). This got me thinking about what other AAA titles/studios currently allow for narrative role-playing outside of BioWare and I honestly can't think of a single one: Yet, our role-playing through the narrative is just as restricted. Again, this was usually the case with The Witcher 3 except that was a game based on a character from a novel while V is a completely original creation. And, conversations typically can only advance through one response. Your actual background doesn't have much influence on events and at best has a one or two extra dialog questions in an exchange. No, V is very much a defined character, much like Geralt of Rivia, whom you can only add a tad bit of flavor to. And, despite all the pre-release statements this is not the narratively free role-playing title they led us to expect. Well, I'm currently playing through Cyberpunk 2077 at the moment like many of you. ![]()
